Non-Invasive Physical Plasma for the Prevention of Radiation Dermatitis in Breast Cancer
Radiation dermatitis is one of the most common side effects of breast cancer radiotherapy and can substantially affect patients’ quality of life. The NIPP-RD III trial investigates non-invasive physical plasma (NIPP) as an innovative approach to prevent and reduce radiation-induced skin reactions. NIPP has shown promising effects on wound healing, inflammation, and microbial modulation, with encouraging results in previous early-phase clinical trials.
The ongoing randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial ( DRKS00032560 / ARO-2024-07) evaluates daily NIPP treatment during radiotherapy and combines clinician-reported toxicity assessments with patient-reported outcomes and objective skin measurements. Translational analyses of the skin microbiome and inflammatory biomarkers aim to better understand the biological mechanisms of radiation dermatitis, identify predictors of treatment response, and support the development of more personalized supportive care strategies.
